The Benefits of Meditation

Meditation is a spiritual practice for some people and it engages the mind and helps people empty their mind of worry and anxiety. There are many physical improvements that it provides. One way people meditate is by practicing yoga. It is just a part of the process kind of a state of mind that happens by practicing yoga.

It improves the blood flow to any part of the body that your mind steadily thinks about, which happens in practicing yoga. This causes the blood to send more nutrients and oxygen to the cells of that organ. Concentration is enhanced. This is something that athletes have discovered and use it to improve their focus on their sport. Meditation brings the mind under control, which makes it stronger. It reins it in and improves cognitive function.

It improves the blood flow to whichever organ the person is meditating about so that the cells get more oxygen and nutrients. It helps make concentration stronger so focus is clearer. Concentrating better improves the way athletes perform. This is because with the mind working more efficiently it can instruct the body about its performance much more effectively.

Yoga and its associated meditation methods are usually thought of as being spiritual in nature, but this practice induces improvements in physical health. Some of the physical benefits are: the improved flow of blood, the lowering of the respiratory rate and oxygen use, relaxation, pain and headaches are reduced as muscle tension is lessened, and the production of serotonin is increase. There is a relationship between low levels of serotonin and depression, obesity, and insomnia. It also eases pre- menstrual syndrome. The actions of viruses are slowed down and it normalizes blood pressure.

Profound rest of the mind and body are part of meditation. Meditation stimulates parts of the brain that induce this rest. It is an effect that is the opposite of the fight or flight syndrome that causes increased chemicals for fighting or running away. The human body receives a lot of stress factors in modern life and it responds as if a physical confrontation were about to ensue. This promotes stress and anxiety in the body because we don’t usually handle our modern problems in this manner. But meditation slows the body processes that fight or flight speeds up so you can find great serenity.

Studies have discovered that meditators do a brain wave shift. They move their brain activity to another spot in the cortex. They go from the right frontal cortex to the left. The right side of the cortex is a stress area; stress is drawn to it. But the left side is a more peaceful area of the brain. There is a particular part of the human brain where fear is dealt with or processed. It is the amygdala. Meditation reduces the activity in this section of the brain.

The move from the right frontal cortex to the left frontal cortex also reduces the negatives: mild depression and anxiety. Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D ran the studies that discovered these results in 2003.
