Traditional astrology has four main types of personality, or more accurately, temperament. The four main types are choleric, sanguine, melancholic, and phlegmatic. Big words yes, but they are easy to understand. They match up with more “modern” words too. Most people are a mixture of two types. But there are pretty pure examples of one type too.
Temperament is entirely an internal formulation. It cannot be shaped from external forces – this is the historical interpretation here. It’s what you were born with. Think of it as your true nature that’s always a part of you.
The one that I will talk about in this article is the Choleric temperament. A choleric is characterized by a very aggressive attitude. It is one of a true leading mentality and a forward-thinking leader essence. Seasonally as you might imagine, it goes with hot and dry summer. It also matches up with the fire element. The zodiac sign of Aries is a fairly good representation as well.
Cholerics are very demanding of themselves and others. Things are pretty cut and dry with them. There’s not a lot of shades of gray. Activity and busy energy are the name of the game. From a zodiac sign perspective, these types exhibit a lot of Aries and Scorpio qualities. The planet Mars is a suitable ruler for them.
For a really excellent analysis of these types of personalities, I highly recommend Dorian Greenbaum’s book Temperament: Astrology’s Forgotten Key. She does a fabulous job of reviewing the classic astrology texts and authors. She synthesizes this knowledge into a cohesive discussion to make sense out of many different works. She also has a system to rate individual’s temperament through a set of chart points and conditions. It’s a very neat and logical approach.
As Dorian Greenbaum states (pg. 93): “Cholerics get along with sanguines who say “happy to help with your project; it sounds like fun!” They get along with phelgmatics because they can easily boss them around. On the other side of the coin, cholerics paired up with other cholerics are more challenging because there’s a natural rivalry between two aggressive persons.
And lastly, cholerics matched up with melancholics aren’t very pleased. A melancholy type is prone to sit around and whine about the expectations and the problems of a situation – overly so for the choleric type. They’d simply want to do the task or assignment and not think too hard about the details and the smaller issues.
The author has a website with traditional astrology articles you’ll find interesting – astrology is anything but stuffy and boring – astrology is extremely practical and answers real-life everyday questions. He also has an interesting discussion on zodiac sign compatibility and part of a scientific process behind it.
