What Are Tarot Cards? What Are They Used For?

It is accepted that tarot cards began in Northern Italy around the fifteenth century. The cards did not start out as a way to do psychic readings. Initially tarot cards consisted of the regular 52 cards with four additional queens. Then there were added 22 additional cards that had symbols and pieces of artwork on them. The Game of Triumphs was a card game played with tarot cards that was popular among the rich. When tarot cards came to Europe some people found that they had mystical powers. Around the 18th and 19th century, the tarot deck became popular with psychics and mystics. Now the most popular thing that is done with tarot cards is psychic readings.

The current, common tarot deck now consists of 78 cards divided into the major arcana and the minor arcana. The 22 cards of the major arcana are the most significant. They are numbered 0 to 21. The other 56 cards are divided into four suits which represent the elements fire, earth, water and air. The first 10 cards are numbered one through 10. Then there are four face cards, a page, a night, a queen, and a king.

The pictures and symbols on the card represent its meaning. The cards are read based on the position, the arcana, and each card’s meaning. A tarot card reading is meant to give someone in sight into things that are going on in their lives. The tarot is meant to give people a greater understanding of relationships, opportunities, and other changes going on in their lives.

There is not just one kind of tarot card deck. You may see different decks, with different illustrations, as you go to different psychics for a reading.
