The Tarot is comprised of 78 cards; four suits each with 14 cards, 21 trump cards, and one Fool. The tarot is divided into two parts: the Major Arcana And the Minor Arcana. The face cards of the tarot have one extra face card then the standard playing cards, that being the knight. Tarot cards in Europe, except for Anglophone countries, were used in card games. In Anglophone countries, the deck is used mostly for Fortune telling and is a favorite in modern psychic readings. Most of the meanings come from the Kabbalah.
It is suggested that the tarot originated in Italy in the 14th century. In the oldest tarot cards in existence today are from the mid-15th century, and belonged to rulers of Milan. It is believed that the word tarot is derived from two Egyptian words: tar, which means Royal and ro, which means Road. Therefore, the Royal Road is the road to wisdom. They believe that the cards are channeled by a force, among other things.
